Adopting Blacky: From the Streets to Our Home

Blacky’s story began on the streets of Cay Bay, here on the island of Sint Maarten. For months, the vets from the St. Maarten Veterinary Clinic tried to catch him, but he was skittish and wary of people. He had learned to survive alone and trusting humans was not easy for him.

That all changed on November 12th, 2018. That morning, I dropped Dan at the airport for his first trip without me since we moved to Sint Maarten. I knew I was going to feel lonely, so after leaving him, I decided to visit the shelter. That is when I saw Blacky. He was older, with a sad, tired look in his eyes that broke my heart. He seemed like a dog who had given up on ever having a home.

I agreed to foster him, but the truth is that from the moment he walked through our door, he became part of our family. He never left.

Because of his past, Blacky has strong attachment issues. He is deeply bonded to me and does not like being left alone. Most of his day is spent sleeping by my side at home, perfectly content as long as I am nearby. He is not the type for a busy doggie daycare with lots of other dogs, he is happiest in a calm, quiet environment.

Despite everything he has been through, Blacky has the sweetest heart. He is incredibly loving with children and has a special bond with our daughter. He is gentle, patient, and protective, the perfect big brother.

From a lonely street dog to a beloved family member, Blacky’s journey reminds me every day how much love a rescue animal can bring into your life.
