Research Projects

One of the things I’ve always been most proud of is our commitment to marine science and conservation. From the moment we opened SXM Divers, it was my dream that our business would not only take people diving but also directly support research that protects sharks and their habitat.

Since becoming pregnant and now being a full-time mum, I haven’t been able to join as many field trips as I used to. But while I’m on shore more often these days, my heart is right there in the water with our team, which, let’s be honest, is basically Dan, who is still deeply involved in every project we support. Watching him lead these efforts makes me incredibly proud, and I love knowing that the work we do at SXM Divers is helping build a safer future for sharks and the people who share the ocean with them.

We’re currently involved in several major initiatives:

The One Shark Project: This program focuses on tiger shark research here in Saint Martin. By catching and tagging these apex predators, scientists can learn more about their movements, genetics, and populations. The data helps replace fear with facts and guides smarter management decisions. Dan has been part of countless tagging trips, working alongside researchers to collect samples, take measurements, and release the sharks safely back into the ocean.

Global FinPrint: This is the world’s largest shark and ray survey, using underwater video stations called BRUVs (Baited Remote Underwater Video) to study populations on reefs. Our team helps deploy and recover the cameras, adding valuable data from Sint Maarten to a global database that’s shaping conservation policies.

Caribbean Shark Coalition: This network brings together scientists, conservationists, and communities to protect sharks and rays across the region. Dan and I have participated in training workshops to improve tagging techniques and non-invasive monitoring methods, ensuring the work we do here is part of a coordinated Caribbean-wide effort.

Even though I’m not the one baiting hooks or deploying cameras at sea right now, I still feel very much part of these projects. Supporting science has always been at the core of my vision for SXM Divers, and it means the world to me that we’re actively contributing to research that can make a real difference for shark conservation.

One day, when our daughter is old enough, I hope she’ll join us out on the boat, learning firsthand why these projects matter and maybe even helping tag her first shark. Until then, I’ll keep cheering for my team from shore, knowing that together, we’re making waves for the ocean we love.
