Biology - Universidad Simón Bolívar. Caracas, Venezuela

Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB) has long been recognized as one of Venezuela's most prestigious and challenging institutions, especially in the fields of science and technology. Its main campus, nestled in the Sartenejas Valley near Caracas, spans over 230 hectares and is renowned not only for its academic rigor but also for its stunning natural beauty. The campus boasts expansive gardens, meadows, and forested areas, complemented by architectural landmarks like the 'Laberinto Cromovegetal,' a living artwork designed by the Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez, featuring thousands of plants arranged in vibrant patterns.

As a child, my parents would take my brother and me to USB's campus to feed the ducks and explore the gardens. Those visits left a lasting impression, and I dreamed of one day studying there. However, my academic journey wasn't straightforward. In primary and high school, I struggled to stay engaged, often finding the classes uninspiring. But when something piqued my interest, I would immerse myself completely.

Determined to attend USB, I dedicated myself to preparing for the entrance exam, which accounted for 75% of the admission criteria, with the remaining 25% based on my academic record. Despite my earlier academic challenges, I achieved the 178th position out of over 10,000 applicants, a moment of immense pride and disbelief.

Studying biology at USB was both exhilarating and demanding. I discovered a deep passion for subjects like zoology, ecology, math, and physics. However, I found lab work less appealing; the artificial lighting and indoor environment made me yearn for the outdoors. To explore my interests further, I participated in various research projects, from studying ants to dolphins, seeking the niche that resonated with me.

My true calling became evident when I joined the university's diving club. Learning to scuba dive and taking a freediving course opened up a new world beneath the waves. Being in the ocean brought me unparalleled joy and a sense of purpose.

USB wasn't just an academic institution for me; it was a place of personal growth and discovery. I formed lasting friendships and was mentored by professors who nurtured my curiosity and guided my aspirations. The university's commitment to excellence and its breathtaking campus provided the perfect environment for me to evolve both academically and personally.

Reflecting on my time at USB, I'm grateful for the challenges and opportunities that shaped my path. The combination of rigorous academics, supportive mentors, and the serene beauty of the campus gardens made my experience truly transformative.
